GRAND BLANC, Mich. — A Sunday morning service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc turned into tragedy when a man rammed his car into the building, opened fire on congregants, and set the church ablaze, authorities said.

At least two people were killed and eight others wounded in the attack, which began shortly after services started. Some of the victims are in critical condition, and children are among those injured, according to a source familiar with the incident.
The suspected gunman, a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan, was killed in a shootout with police. Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye said the man was armed with an assault rifle and appeared to be acting alone.
“We believe we have the guy who did this,” Renye told reporters.
According to investigators, the suspect drove his vehicle into the church before stepping out and firing multiple rounds at worshippers. “He then exited his vehicle firing several rounds at individuals within the church,” Renye said.
Authorities believe the man deliberately set the building on fire during the assault. The blaze was extinguished, but officials fear additional victims may be found once the scene is fully secured.
“We do believe more people were near the fire and they were unable to get out of the church,” Renye said.
Emergency crews transported the wounded to nearby hospitals. Local officials have not yet released the identities of the victims.
Authorities are still searching for a motive. Police plan to execute a search warrant at the suspect’s home and review his cell phone records.
The FBI has dispatched more than 100 agents to Grand Blanc to assist with the investigation and interview witnesses. A bomb squad was also called to examine a suspicious item discovered on the church property, a law enforcement source told the media.
The attack has stunned the Grand Blanc community, where LDS church leaders and members are still awaiting word on the full extent of casualties. Officials said the investigation remains active, and more details are expected to be released later today.
