Poll: Americans Divided on Trump Verdict

A new ABC News/Ipsos poll reveals that a plurality of Americans, 50%, believe the guilty verdict against former President Donald Trump on all 34 counts in his hush money trial was correct. Nearly as many, 49%, think Trump should end his 2024 presidential campaign as a result. This comes after the historic trial concluded with the first-ever conviction of a former president, relating to falsifying business records about a payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

Despite the verdict, Trump's favorability has remained stable at 31%. He has vowed to appeal the decision, criticizing the case as politically motivated. The poll found that 47% of Americans agree with Trump, believing the charges were politically driven, while 38% disagree. Additionally, 51% think Trump intentionally did something illegal, 12% believe he did something wrong but not intentionally, and 19% think he did nothing wrong.

Public opinion on whether Trump should suspend his campaign remains consistent with an April 2023 poll, where 48% thought he should end his campaign following his indictment. The recent poll shows 49% hold this view after the conviction.

President Joe Biden's favorability remains low and unchanged at 32%. The poll highlights a significant partisan divide: 83% of Democrats believe the verdict was correct and 79% think Trump should end his campaign, while only 16% of Republicans agree with the verdict and think Trump should withdraw.

Independent voters and those who view both Biden and Trump unfavorably, or "double-haters," are critical in this context. A majority of Independents, 52%, and 65% of double-haters believe the verdict was correct. Similarly, 52% of Independents and 67% of double-haters think Trump should end his campaign.

Opinions on the political motivation of the trial also vary, with 45% of Independents and 51% of double-haters agreeing, compared to 83% of Republicans and 20% of Democrats.
