This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in my first Highland Games, held at the Sherman Celtic Festival in Texas. The journey took me two and a half hours north, but the experience was well worth it. Competing alongside friends and making new acquaintances, I engaged in various events, including throwing stones and hammers, all within a joyous and family-friendly atmosphere.
The Highland Games have a rich history rooted in the highlands of Scotland, where Scots were once barred from bearing arms by a tyrannical English monarchy. In response, they developed these games as a means to train physically without weapons, using their farming activities as a convenient cover. This history resonated deeply with me as I competed, reminding me of the resilience and strength of my ancestors.
At the festival, I felt a strong sense of community among participants who shared a profound pride in their heritage. Many were young men, students from various Texas universities, who were politically aware and brimming with family pride. Their stories of lineage traced back to Scotland and other Celtic nations created a tapestry of shared identity. It was heartening to see a retired military gentleman among us, showcasing that the spirit of competition and camaraderie knows no age.
The festival itself was a vibrant celebration of Celtic culture. Clan tents invited attendees to explore their roots and connect with distant relatives. The sound of bluegrass music filled the air, intertwined with traditional Celtic melodies, reminding us of our shared cultural heritage. One memorable moment was visiting a tent where local blacksmiths displayed their craftsmanship. I couldn't resist purchasing a stunning Damascus steel Dirk, a traditional dagger of Highland warriors, which now serves as a cherished memento of the event.

As I threw the hammer and stones, I felt a surge of pride not just for my own heritage but for the collective history we all share as Patriots. The comradery was palpable, and I realized that events like these are vital for fostering connections among individuals who cherish their ancestry.
To my fellow Patriots, I urge you to celebrate your heritage by attending a Celtic festival with Highland Games. Better yet, consider signing up as an athlete in the novice division. Embrace the challenge of participating in these events, and take the time to stroll through the festival, enjoying the music and the company of likeminded individuals. Thank our Celtic forebears for their contributions to the American identity. Most importantly, commit to physical training for this event, as a true Patriot should embody strength and vitality.
I believe that the Highland Games are more than just a competition; they are a celebration of our shared history, culture, and the enduring spirit of those who came before us. Let us honor that legacy together.
