I wrote this Tuesday April 14th. This week so far has been marked by controversy, President Donald Trump has drawn significant attention for both insulting Pope Leo XIV and posting an AI-generated image depicting himself as a Jesus-like figure with demons in the background. The backlash from both actions has been swift and intense, particularly among religious communities. It appears to me like Trump is beginning to turn against the right-wing evangelicals base that republicans have relied on for years.

Insults to the Papacy

Shortly before sharing the AI-generated image, Trump publicly criticized Pope Leo XIV, labeling him as "weak on crime" and "terrible for foreign policy." These comments, made during a rally, have been described by religious experts as unprecedented, raising eyebrows within both political and religious circles. Trump's remarks were perceived as a direct affront to the papacy, igniting outrage among Catholics and others who view the Pope as a spiritual leader. It also angered other Christian denominations as it was an attack on Christian values as a whole. I wonder if Trump would ever attack Jewish or Hindu Values?

The Controversial Image

In conjunction with his remarks about the Pope, Trump posted an AI-generated image on his Truth Social account that many interpreted as portraying him in a Christ-like manner. The image featured a figure resembling Trump in a healing pose, flanked by disciples and Luciferian figures overhead. Following widespread criticism and accusations of blasphemy, Trump deleted the post, claiming he thought it depicted him as a doctor rather than a religious figure. Last I checked doctors did not wear robes.

Public and Religious Outcry

The combination of Trump's attack on Pope Leo and the posting of the controversial image has resulted in significant backlash. Many religious leaders and commentators have condemned Trump's actions as "outrageous, offensive, and profane." Representative Jim McGovern expressed his disgust, asking, "Does Trump now think he is Jesus?"

In response to Trump's criticisms, Pope Leo XIV stated, "I do not fear Trump," emphasizing his commitment to addressing important moral issues rather than engaging in personal attacks.

To be clear on my position I am a Catholic and a long-time conservative activist. I am appalled by both his comments towards the Catholic church, and I am horrified by his Facebook post which was a blatant act of blasphemy.
