Baltimore Bridge Collapses After Being Struck by Cargo Ship

Updated: Apr 14

The collapsed wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has become the focus of recovery efforts after a devastating incident early Tuesday morning. Authorities are grappling with the aftermath of a cargo ship collision that sent the structure and its occupants plunging into the frigid waters of the Patapsco River.

As the region mourns, federal investigators are painstakingly piecing together the events leading to the bridge's collapse, bracing for a protracted and costly rebuilding process. The collision claimed the lives of six workers, who are presumed dead, with recovery efforts underway to retrieve their bodies.

Of the eight individuals who fell into the river after the collision, two were rescued, though one remains in critical condition. The remaining six, believed to be construction workers repairing potholes on the bridge, are still unaccounted for.

"These are my friends, my co-workers," said fellow construction worker Jesus Campos, who was scheduled to work on the bridge the following morning.

The U.S. Coast Guard, after suspending its search and rescue operations, resumed recovery efforts Wednesday morning, acknowledging the grim reality of the situation given the passage of time and water temperature. The cargo ship, the Dali, a nearly 1,000-foot-long vessel registered in Singapore, lost power before colliding with the 1.6 mile-long bridge, prompting a mayday call and swift action to halt traffic.

As investigators delve into the circumstances surrounding the ship's erratic course and the bridge's collapse, they have recovered the voyage data recorder, akin to black box recorders in airplanes. Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), appeared on CNN Wednesday morning to inform the public of the details of the investigation, stating "we've sent [the data recorder] back to our lab to evaluate and begin to develop a timeline of events that led up to the strike on the bridge, and we hope to share that information with the public later today."

The economic fallout from the incident looms large, with a significant portion of the Baltimore port indefinitely closed. The port, vital for auto imports, serves as an economic lifeline for Maryland and the region, generating billions in revenue and supporting thousands of jobs.

Amid the devastation, pledges of reconstruction and support have emerged. President Biden has vowed federal assistance for the bridge's reconstruction, emphasizing its crucial role in maintaining economic stability. This collapse blocks the Port of Baltimore, which handles $80 Billion in cargo each year.
